An aide to former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has been remanded in a correctional facility after sharing media content deemed offensive to the current governor, Ahmad Aliyu.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, the aide, Shafiu Umar, is accused of posting a video on Facebook that allegedly insulted the governor, his wife, and the deputy governor, as well as sharing Governor Aliyu’s senior secondary school certificate.

The controversial posts reportedly included a video showing Governor Aliyu struggling to construct a sentence in English, along with a document that suggested the governor had failed his Senior Secondary School Examination, scoring an F9 in English.

Additionally, Umar is accused of circulating a video of the governor’s wife, Fatima Aliyu, spreading money on the ground during her birthday celebration.

Umar was charged with circulating injurious falsehood and a matter known to be defamatory, both of which contravene the Penal Code law, according to the First Information Report (FIR) obtained by reporters.

During the court proceedings on Monday, Magistrate Fatima Hassan barred journalists from covering the session.

Umar’s lawyer, Yusuf Abubakar, stated that his client denied the charges and made an oral bail application.

However, the Chief Magistrate adjourned the ruling on the bail application to September 6 and ordered Umar to be remanded in custody until then.

Recall that  whistleblower and investigative journalist PIDOMNIGERIA  has continued to be in police custody since August 5  without access to legal representation.

Despite requests, the journalist has been denied opportunities to speak to his lawyers, raising serious questions about the state of press freedom and due process in Nigeria.
