Is Nigeria’s Ebola Outbreak a Ploy to Rig 2027 Elections and Push the US Health Deal?

1

The confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians asking if the outbreak is a politically motivated fabrication designed to manipulate the 2027 general elections and deepen the country’s ties with the United States.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case on October 20, 2026. The patient reportedly travelled by air from Uganda. Health officials said they have identified 44 contacts and are currently tracing them. The timing of the announcement, just two months before the general elections, has fuelled intense suspicion across the country.

Many Nigerians took to X to express their disbelief. A viral post by user @felixherbt questioned the government’s motives, stating that discovering a dangerous virus with no cure just before an election raises serious questions. The post asked what the government stands to achieve with the alert, listing population control, suppression of voter turnout, restriction of international travel and foreign oversight, attraction of international aid, and facilitation of an international loan from the IMF. The user also noted the government approved N40.76 billion for healthcare but only released N36 million for a population of over 234 million people.

Other users echoed these sentiments. @AngaLarry wrote that election fraud is coming and urged Nigerians to be vigilant. @Seyonhundeyin1 stated that the outbreak fits a political agenda and warned that the government must leave office regardless of the tactics used. @Queenlaakeli questioned the logistics of the case, asking how a person could travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda, pass through heavy traffic, fly to Nigeria, and only start showing symptoms upon arrival. The user suggested that Uganda was sacrificed to create a scenario to control people and restrict visa applications. @nansbello mocked the government’s predictability, linking the outbreak to the Senate’s move to seek emergency funding and mandatory screening at all entry points.

The allegations have also revived scrutiny of the controversial bilateral health agreement between Nigeria and the United States. Nigeria signed the $5.1 billion deal in December 2025. The agreement permits the sharing of sensitive health information, including medical records, blood samples, pathogen testing, and DNA sequencing with the United States. A separate specimen-sharing agreement obliges Nigeria to provide biological samples and related data within five days of a request and could remain in force for up to 25 years. A post by @BOGbadams linked the Ebola case directly to the deal, stating that the Nigerian government gladly sold out the health sector to the US, a deal that Ghana rejected. Ghana’s President John Mahama rejected a similar compact in April 2026, describing its conditions as humiliating and an affront to national sovereignty.

As the controversy rages, the Senate has moved to address the outbreak. Lawmakers called for emergency funding and mandatory screening at all entry points. They also urged the replacement of the Quarantine Act of 1926 with a modern public health law aligned with the International Health Regulations of 2005.

The Federal Government has not responded directly to the allegations that the Ebola outbreak is being politicised. The NCDC has maintained that it is following established protocols and that the situation is under control. But the government’s silence on the political dimension of the outbreak has only deepened suspicion. For a government that has spent 261 days abroad on 52 foreign trips, added N79.41 trillion to the national debt, and failed to secure the release of children abducted from their schools, the allegations of manipulation are not surprising. They are the product of a trust deficit that the Tinubu administration has created and cannot escape.
