Sudan: Khartoum Governor Orders Foreigners to Leave Amid Escalating War

In a statement issued over the weekend, the Governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Hamza, gave all foreigners in the Sudanese capital and surrounding regions a 15-day ultimatum to leave with effect from Friday, July 12, 2024.

The Sudanese embassy in Nigeria stated over the weekend announcing this move, which is intended to rein in the rising insecurity in the country.

The statement by the governor claimed that nationals from countries neighbouring Sudan had become major combatants and mercenaries in the ranks of Militia RSF.

The order aims to save lives during the war, following a meeting by the Khartoum State Security Affairs Coordination Committee.

State authority gives foreigners a deadline to leave the state based on emergency. This, the Khartoum state extended only 15 days as a deadline for foreigners to leave the state, according to the decision issued by the Security Committee, the statement read.

This statement comes after the committee held a meeting to look into the intended measures for implementing a curfew and motorcycle ban, all of which were issued on July 11, 2024.

In early May, Governor Hamza had secured approval from the head of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, for declaring a state of emergency in Khartoum.

The move was later conveyed by the Director in charge of the Department of Foreigners and Immigration Registration in Khartoum State to all foreigners, asking them to leave the country within 15 days stipulated as quickly as possible for safety reasons.

According to reports, the country had been plunged into a final brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF since April 2023.

The power struggle over Sudan between SAF chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo has come at the cost of thousands of deaths and millions of internal displacements among hundreds of thousands fleeing to neighbouring countries.

It has so far served to deepen the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where there are losses of life and health deterioration attributed to widespread hunger and a collapsing health system.
