Student Recounts Negligence and Mishandling of Sexual Harassment Case by Hired Labourer at Anchor University

A student of Anchor University, Evangel Ganiyu, has made allegations of negligence and mishandling of a sexual harassment case involving a female student and an unskilled labourer working on campus. The university is a private institution owned by the Deeper Christian Life Ministry.

She narrated her ordeal on X,  waking up to find an almost naked labourer, identified as Uche Okoro, lying beside her in bed within her hostel. The labourer had been hired for ongoing renovations at the university.

I woke up to feel the weight of somebody beside me. I believed it was my friend who slept over. It wasn’t. The person in this photo, who goes by Uche Okoro, was beside me in bed, almost fully naked, with his shorts hanging so low off his body I could see his butt, Ganiyu wrote in her post.

After raising the alarm and reporting the incident, Ganiyu identified Okoro among the workers on campus, although he initially denied any involvement.

It was only after another female student reported that Okoro had been peeping at her in the bathroom earlier that day that he admitted his actions and apologised.

Despite this admission, the response of the university’s management has sparked widespread outrage. Ganiyu revealed that after reporting the matter to the school’s porters and the security unit, she was taken to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele.

However, instead of addressing her concerns, Ganiyu claimed that the Vice-Chancellor questioned her clothing and insinuated that she was being “economical with the truth.”

According to Ganiyu, Professor Bandele suggested a male doctor medically examine her to verify her claims, further implying that she was not being entirely honest about the events.

He [the Vice-Chancellor] said that I am not a two-year-old girl, asking how I wouldn’t know if a man penetrated me or not, Ganiyu stated.

Her post, which has since garnered significant attention online, also highlighted a broader pattern of the university allegedly attempting to cover up similar incidents in the past, shaming victims or urging them to forgive their abusers without due process.

In response to the viral post, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency responded to her on X, encouraging Ganiyu to file a formal report and offering immediate support.
