Reports from Russian media have disclosed that seven people died and many others were injured when a city bus carrying 20 passengers lost control, hit a car, and fell off a bridge into a river in the centre of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Footage of the incident showed the 262 bus moving slowly before swerving while turning right, hitting parked cars on the opposite side of the street, before plunging into the Molka River.

Reports say emergency responders and bystanders worked quickly to rescue people from the submerged bus. Everyone was eventually pulled out, but searches in the river continued.

Initially, three people drowned, and four more died later. However, the death toll may rise as several victims remain in critical condition in the hospital.

Daily Beast reported that the driver has been arrested and charged with traffic violations, potentially facing up to seven years in prison if convicted.

St. Petersburg police stated that the city government’s transportation committee attributed the accident to the driver losing control of the bus, as state-run news agency TASS reported.

Personally coordinating efforts, St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov assured that prompt assistance was being provided to the victims.
