Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has vowed to investigate the “widespread corruption” perpetuated by former President Macky Sall.

Sonko disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference accusing Sall’s administration of embezzling public funds, false declaration of debt and the country’s public deficit.

The policy of unbridled indebtedness (under former president Macky Sall) has led to the use of resources that is not transparent, and that is conducive to widespread corruption,” he told journalists, denouncing the ‘embezzlement of public funds en masse.’

He further stated,

We had no idea that things were so catastrophic, accusing Sall’s administration of having lied and falsified figures, particularly with international partners.

Also speaking at the press conference, Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne said the actions appeared to be “criminal in nature, which the competent judicial authorities will have to determine using investigations that they deem appropriate”.

Meanwhile, Sonko’s disclosure was after Senegalese President Diomaye Faye requested that he thoroughly review the country’s financial status.
