Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Burkinabé counterpart, Karamoko Traore, signed a joint statement on Saturday maintaining agreement on ‘No First Deployment of Weapons in Space.’
The concept revolves around international policies and agreements aimed at preventing the weaponisation of outer space between Russia and Burkina Faso.
The signing reportedly occurred on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly session in New York, as both countries plan towards bilateral talks.
According to the statement, “An involved exchange of views took place on current topics of bilateral interest as well as of the regional and international agendas. The importance of further strengthening close foreign policy coordination of the two countries was noted.
It will be recalled that West Africa Weekly reported how the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), consisting Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, partnered with Russia to secure a satellite deal to strengthen security.
Following the announcement, Russia’s Lavrov and Burkinabé’s Traore assented to the joint statement, affirming their commitment to intensify cooperation between their countries.
Russia’s relations with Burkina Faso range from trade expansion to economic and humanitarian ties, with their strategic relations on military and security cooperation sparking the debates of Russia’s growing presence in Africa over the U.S.
