Putin re-elected as president of Russia, retains BRICS chairmanship

Vladimir Putin has secured his fifth term as President of Russia with 87% of the final vote.

The election, which witnessed the highest voter turnout since 1991, solidified Putin’s hold on power and set the stage for his becoming the longest-serving Russian leader in over two centuries.

Addressing supporters at his campaign headquarters in Moscow, Putin expressed gratitude for the widespread support, stating, “I want to thank all of you and all citizens of the country for your support and this trust.”

He further asserted Russia’s resilience in the face of external pressures, declaring, “No matter who or how much they want to intimidate us, no matter who or how much they want to suppress us, our will, our consciousness — no one has ever succeeded in anything like this in history. It has not worked now and will not work in the future. Never.”

Putin’s victory comes amid a landscape where his major opponents have either met untimely ends, faced imprisonment or sought exile.

His administration has been marked by a rigorous crackdown on dissenters, both domestically and internationally, particularly in light of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

The election results saw negligible support for other candidates, with none garnering more than 5% of the vote.

With his re-election secured, Putin is poised to continue his efforts in Ukraine and assert Russian influence on the global stage, particularly within the BRICS collective.

Russia’s chairmanship of the BRICS alliance adds a new dimension to Putin’s presidency. The country is set to host the highly anticipated 2024 Summit in Kazan.
