The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a village in Gezira province, Sudan, on Wednesday, killing at least 100 people and injuring dozens, officials reported.

The Madani Resistance Committee, a local group formed to protect residents in Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira, reported on social media that the RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese army for over a year, attacked with heavy artillery.

Stating that the attack killed over 104 people and injured hundreds, based on initial reports from village residents, the committee also accused the RSF of looting.

They shared footage on social media showing what they described as a “mass grave” with rows of white shrouds in a courtyard.

The RSF claimed on X that the Sudanese military was planning to attack its troops in Jabal al-Awliya by mobilising forces in three bases. However, the Associated Press said it could not verify this claim.

The RSF also said it attacked three camps around Wad al-Noura and clashed with the Sudanese army.

Our forces will not stand idly by in the face of any movements or gatherings by the enemy and will work to pursue and defeat the enemy, it stated.

The resistance committee dismissed the RSF’s statement as an attempt to justify attacking the villagers. They added that the villagers had requested help from the armed forces, which did not respond.

The military has not commented, but Sudan’s ruling sovereignty council, led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, called the attack a “heinous massacre of defenceless civilians.”

The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has devastated the country, causing widespread clashes, severe food shortages, and pushing the population to the brink of famine.

More than 14,000 people have been killed, thousands injured, and hundreds of thousands displaced.
