A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Mr Gbogi Emmanuel, has resigned from the party, criticising it for abandoning the principles of democracy and failing the Nigerian masses.

Emmanuel, a chieftain from Ward 6 in Akoko South West Local Government Area, made his decision known in a letter addressed to the ward chairman.

Citing reasons for his resignation, Emmanuel accused the ruling party of fostering poverty and misery, stating that the APC has failed to uphold fairness, equity, and impartiality—core democratic tenets.

He also condemned the party’s loyalty structure and decried its practice of “robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

His resignation comes after the recently concluded APC primary election, which produced incumbent governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the party’s governorship candidate. Emmanuel described the primary process as “shabby and shoddy”. Emmanuel also rejected recent appointment as Special Assistant to the governor.

Earlier, Governor Aiyedatiwa had appointed 28 Senior Special Assistants and 316 Special Assistants in a recent political reshuffle and included Emmanuel. However, Emmanuel declined the role, expressing surprise that he was appointed without prior consultation.

In a letter titled “Declination of Special Assistant Appointment,” Emmanuel explained his decision to turn down the role, stating that his prior appointment as Chairman of the Transition Committee of Akoko South South LCDA had been abruptly rescinded, leaving him feeling undervalued by the administration.

He remarked,

This new appointment seems more like a political strategy to recruit ward canvassers ahead of the next governorship election, but is cunningly decorated as Special Assistant to the Governor.

Emmanuel said the role appeared to be a demotion and not aligned with his professional capabilities.
