The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that a tragic road accident occurred on Sunday on the Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi State, claiming the lives of 19 people at the Okene bypass.

FRSC spokesperson ACM Jonas Agwu explained that despite three hours of rescue efforts, the emergency teams were hindered by a fire that engulfed the vehicles involved—a Dangote truck with registration NSH680YJ and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration KMC455ZE.

The collision occurred when the Dangote truck, travelling from Port Harcourt, unlawfully overtook another vehicle and collided head-on with the Toyota Hiace Bus en route from Kano. The resulting inferno led to the tragic loss of lives, with 19 fatalities out of the 22 individuals involved, all male.

“Unfortunately, 19 people of the 22 victims were killed and one injured. The remaining two victims, who were rescued by FRSC operatives without injuries, survived the crash because they complied with traffic regulations on the compulsory use of seatbelts.

“The corpses of the dead victims whose lives were claimed by the crash have been deposited at Okene General Hospital,” the FRSC stated.

This incident occurred days after the corps marshal, during his press conference, highlighted the importance of moral and ethical renewal among road users, cautioning against traffic violations and citing examples where such violations led to tragic accidents, including fires, resulting in loss of life and property damage.
