NiMET Forecasts More Severe Weather After Floods Ravage Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted more severe weather in the coming days after various parts of Nigeria had been ravaged by floods in the past weeks and months.

NiMET, in its weather forecast released on Monday predicted heavy thunderstorms and rains from Tuesday to Thursday across the country.

The agency forecasts thunderstorms across the Northeast and Northwest regions, particularly Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa and Kaduna States, during the morning hours of Tuesday.

“In the North Central region, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Niger states during the morning hours.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa States,” it stated further.

It noted that there are prospects of moderate rains in the Southern states of Ebonyi, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa during the morning hours of Tuesday.

“Later in the day, intermittent rains are expected over the entire region,” it added.

The agency also predicted thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna States in the morning hours, as well as in the evening.

“In the southern region, isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts of Osun, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Delta, Lagos, Rivers and Bayelsa states in the morning hours,” it added.

This is disturbing news to many Nigerians as over a million victims of the recent Maiduguri floods are yet to recover from the devastating impact of the floods.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),  floods have claimed over 200 lives across the country this year, with most of the deaths recorded in Borno, Kano and Jigawa.

The latest NiMet forecast threatens more floods. The agency has urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas and to take adequate precautions against winds.
