Nigeria: IDPs Protest in Makurdi Over Hunger, Neglect, and Diversion of Relief Materials After Tinubu’s ‘Commiserate’ Visit to Benue — Woman Faints, Children Starve

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Yelwata crisis in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State took to the streets of Makurdi on Thursday to protest worsening conditions at their camp. The protesters decried hunger, alleged neglect by authorities, and the diversion of critical relief materials meant for survival hours after a presidential visit to the state.

The protest, which took place near the Makurdi International Market where many of the IDPs are currently sheltered, led to a blockade of the busy highway, resulting in a heavy traffic gridlock that disrupted economic and social activities in the area.

There’s no food, our children are starving, we sleep on the floor, and mosquitoes are almost killing us,” a female protester said, holding up a placard. “We are suffering, and people are dying, the demonstrators demanded immediate government intervention and called for transparency in the management of aid, DailyPost reported.

Some IDPs alleged that food items and mattresses reportedly donated by well-meaning Nigerians, including Dr. Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, have not been distributed to those in need.

The IDPs further claimed that at least two persons had recently died in the camp due to starvation and deteriorating health conditions. In a related development, an unidentified woman reportedly fainted on Thursday from hunger but was later revived, according to eyewitnesses.

The protesters accused officials of camp management of hoarding relief materials and possibly diverting donations for personal gain.

They urged the Benue State Government, humanitarian agencies, and relevant stakeholders to investigate the alleged misconduct and ensure that all donations reach the displaced persons directly. Despite several calls for help, the IDPs say they continue to face deplorable living conditions, with little to no access to adequate food, healthcare, or sanitation.
