Nigeria Slams The Seyi Tinubu AskCityBoy App For Being A Glorified Customer Service Chatbot Disguised As Advanced Artificial Intelligence

Stripped of its high-tech marketing and political fanfare, the recently launched pro-government AI platform “AskCityBoy” operates functionally as an advanced automated customer service system rather than a true artificial intelligence engine, software engineers have revealed.

The voice-activated platform, which went viral after a high-profile demonstration by the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, has been heavily promoted by the City Boy Movement as a cutting-edge civic engagement tool. However, a technical breakdown of the software shows it utilizes a highly restricted, closed-loop framework identical to the basic chatbots used by banks and telecom companies to handle standard customer inquiries.

Unlike advanced generative AI models that actively browse the open web, synthesize multiple viewpoints, or analyze real-time macroeconomic shifts, AskCityBoy is completely blocked from external search. Software developers note that the platform is essentially an automated, voice-activated FAQ menu. The developers spent roughly six months pre-feeding the system a specific, highly curated script composed exclusively of official federal government data points, infrastructure milestones, and disbursal logs from initiatives like the NELFUND student loan scheme.

“In computer science, this is what we call a closed-loop data retrieval system,” explains an Abuja-based systems architect. “It doesn’t ‘think’ or generate new insights. It simply listens for keywords, matches them to a pre-programmed database of government achievements, and reads the approved answer back to the user. It is political customer service.”

Because the AI operates under strict informational confinement, the tool is fundamentally incapable of providing open-ended web answers. Just as a commercial bank’s automated chatbot is hardcoded to never discuss rival financial institutions or internal controversies, AskCityBoy is programmed to stick strictly to the country’s official federal milestones. If a user asks the platform about skyrocketing food inflation, currency devaluations, or the biting impact of fuel subsidy removals, the system is designed to deflect back to its pre-loaded script of infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

This advanced customer service model serves a specific narrative purpose. By wrapping standard public relations scripts in the trendy veneer of artificial intelligence, the political machinery attempts to give automated data an aura of objective, data-driven authority. This framework sets a precedent where a closed-loop FAQ bot functions as a controlled digital pipeline, allowing political campaigns to completely automate and manage the flow of civic information.
