NDLEA Arrests Tinubu’s Ally, Ayiri Emami’s Brother, in 414kg Drug Bust — Raising Fresh Questions About President’s Drug Links

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Ajetsibogho Emami, also known as “Warri Kinsman,” in connection with a 414-kilogram drug seizure in Lagos. Emami is the younger brother of Chief Ayiri Emami, a prominent figure in Delta State and a known close associate of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the NDLEA, the drugs, 24 jumbo sacks of high-grade cannabis sativa, were intercepted during a late June operation in the Lekki area. Emami was taken into custody along with others suspected to be part of the trafficking operation.

The arrest has drawn national attention due to the Emami family’s close ties to politics. Chief Ayiri, Ajetsibogho’s elder brother, is a well-known businessman and traditional leader in the Niger Delta. He has been closely associated with President Tinubu for years and personally congratulated him on his 50th birthday celebration earlier this year, commending his role in promoting peace in the region.

The incident has reignited public scrutiny of Tinubu’s past drug-related controversy. In 1993, Tinubu forfeited $460,000 to U.S. authorities after funds in his American bank accounts were linked to proceeds from heroin trafficking, according to court records from the Northern District of Illinois. Though never criminally charged, the forfeiture stemmed from a federal investigation into narcotics and money laundering.

While Tinubu has consistently denied any involvement in drug crimes, the arrest of someone closely tied to his inner circle raises concerns about the company he keeps and its implications for his administration’s credibility.

Emami is expected to be charged in court in the coming days. As of the time of filing this report, neither the NDLEA nor the presidency has issued further statements on the matter.
