As the principal agency responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of statistical data in Nigeria, the NBS recently released a report that revealed Nigerians paid ₦2.23 trillion as ransom to kidnappers between May 2023 and April 2024, showing the alarming rise of criminal activities across the country despite significant government spending on security.

The report, contained in the NBS’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, noted that over the period under review, an estimated 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded in Nigerian households.
