In a decision announced at an Extraordinary FIFA Congress, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain have been chosen to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while Saudi Arabia will stage the tournament in 2034.
The 2030 event will also feature three memorable centenary celebration matches in South America, held in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to honour the tournament’s 100-year history.
The decision was made following a bidding process initiated in October 2023.
This unique hosting arrangement is said to show FIFA’s commitment to harmony and rotation between football confederations
FIFA President Gianni Infantino underscored the unifying power of football, stating, “In today’s divided world, where it seems that nobody can agree any more on anything, to be able to agree on something like this is an incredible message of unity and positivity. We need these messages today.”
The 2030 tournament will be shared by three continents, marking a historic collaboration between Europe, Africa, and South America.
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will host most of the matches, with centenary games in Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Asunción.
These matches will pay tribute the first-ever FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930.
For the 2034 edition, Saudi Arabia was selected as host. Infantino celebrated the significance of the decision, declaring,
The FIFA World Cup is unique, a catalyst for positive social change and unity. Seven countries have won their World Cup today—Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. This is a day of unity and celebration.
