A Microsoft outage on Friday has affected banks, flights, media organisations and major companies globally.

Microsoft said it is working on fixing the issue affecting its customers from accessing Microsoft 365 software applications and services.

The outage occurred following a faulty update from a cybersecurity provider, CrowdStrike, which, as a result, started switching computers offline. CrowdStrike is used globally by businesses to manage the security of their Windows PCs (which is owned by Microsoft Corporation) and servers.

Online services like Visa and Amazon were part of the organisations affected by the outage.

In the United States, flights have been grounded following the outage. Airlines affected by the outage include Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines. Trains stations were not left out either.

In the media sector, the United Kingdom’s broadcaster, Sky News, was affected, causing them to go off air. Australia’s ABC broadcaster was also affected.

Microsoft is the biggest company in the world, operating in over 190 countries. The company offers operating systems, cloud computing, software, and related services.

Businesses worldwide are expected to witness substantial financial losses due to the Microsoft outage.
