Niger President, Brigadier General Abdourahame Tiani, has extended his condolences to Burkina Faso following the deadly terrorist attack in Barsalgho, which claimed over 200 lives and injured at least 140.

In a letter addressed to the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the people, and the bereaved families, Tiani expressed sincere condolences and compassion, stating that the attacks only strengthen the determination of the AES to defeat the criminals and their sponsors who seek to hinder peace and progress within the confederation.

He said:

“The Nigerien people are always in solidarity with the brotherly Burkinabe people in all the trials they are going through, and their determination will not waver in our common struggle for true sovereignty and the integrated development of our AES Confederation.

The number of our Martyrs, instead of dampening our morality, only strengthens our unwavering determination to defeat the criminals and their sponsors who seek to hinder our inexorable march towards peace and progress within the AES Confederation space,” President Tiani said.

The Nigerien head of state wished a speedy recovery to the injured and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

Similarly, in an open letter addressed to Traore, a Professor of Mathematics, Abdoudramane Sawadogo, expressed that the attacks were only aimed at seeing the President’s downfall.

“We all know that they only do this just to wake up one morning and hear “IB has fallen” to finally make our country a nightmare,” Sawadogo said.

He, however, assured Traore of the people’s continous support.

We just ask you to continue to do your best for the people, for this country. Despite the obstacles, keep going. If you stumble, the people will keep you balanced. The forces of evil will never make us falter,” he said.

West Africa Weekly reported that Burkina Faso had been heavily affected by insecurity due to terrorist attacks from Al-Qaida affiliated and other regional Islamist groups. However, a coup d’état, which removed the former President over his inability to deal with the country’s Islamist insurgency, brought to power Captain Traoré, who has made tackling insecurity a priority and has since taken various initiatives to end it.

In January 2023, Traore ended the military accord with France after it failed to combat the insecurity that plagued the region despite years of establishing military bases. He also signed a mutual defence pact with Niger and Mali, forming the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), aiming to collectively combat armed rebellion or external threats while also strengthening his alliance with Russia.
