Malian customs officials have seized more than a ton of explosives concealed in a passenger bus from Ghana, the Directorate of Intelligence and the Fight against Fraud reported.

The explosives, totalling 5,000 pieces and weighing more than a ton, were discovered during a search of the overloaded bus, which had travelled into Bamako, the Malian capital.

Under the leadership of Inspector Amadou Sanogo, customs officers tracked the bus to a customs facility in Faladié, where they uncovered 28 packages of Nigerian-made explosives.

Authorities believe the shipment was destined for Guinea, as a Guinean citizen admitted ownership of 19 packages.

This individual is currently in the custody of the Commune VI prosecutor’s office and is facing further investigation. Another suspect linked to illicit trafficking fled the scene during the search and remains at large.

The seizure highlights the vigilance of Malian Customs following recent security concerns.

This operation follows the seizure of 55 tons of spoiled meat that was hidden in nine containers transported from Mali’s northern regions. The spoiled meat was intercepted in Ségou by customs agents monitoring the flow of goods.

These efforts are part of a broader anti-fraud initiative led by the Directorate General of Customs to curb illegal imports and ensure safety amidst growing security challenges.
