Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has alleged that there are plans by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to unleash a barrage of tweets against him, purportedly exceeding 15,000 in number.

Soyombo has been vocal about what he described as rampant corruption within the NCS.

In a recent statement on X addressing the alleged retaliation plans, Soyombo emphasised that his sole mission is to expose the pervasive corruption within the NCS, which he claimed has adverse effects on national security and the local economy.

“It is unfortunate that you consider most of my tweets ‘done in bad faith’ and that I am ‘fronting for a group determined to pull the service down by all means necessary’,” Soyombo stated in his address to the NCS.

According to Soyombo, his campaign against the NCS revolves around two key issues: the collusion of customs officers with smugglers of guns, arms, and ammunition, which jeopardises national peace and security, and the collaboration with smugglers to import agricultural produce and meat products at the expense of local farmers and consumers.

“The belief in Customs that ‘over 15,000 active tweets puncturing his illogical submissions’ will ‘force him to reconsider’ is illusory.

“I alone will determine whether to reconsider at all or when to. I remain content with my lone place among over 15,000 wolves.”

Soyombo’s stance comes from his recent investigative expose and documentary report, which revealed alleged corruption within the ranks of Customs officers and shed light on smuggling and illegal activities.

The Nigeria Customs Service is yet to respond to Soyombo’s allegations or the purported plan for a social media campaign against him.
