Kenya’s Senate Set to Debate Impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua

471

Kenya’s Senate is set to debate the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua next week, says  Amason Jeffah Kingi, the Senate Speaker.

According to the Kenya House of Parliament website, 282 lawmakers voted on Tuesday in support, 44 opposed, and one abstained, indicating a supporting of over two-third votes needed to carry the “Special Motion” presented to the Senate by Kibwezi West lawmaker Hon. Mwengi Mutuse.

The Senate Speaker said the Senate would investigate the allegations on Wednesday and next week Thursday.

Gachagua, however, denied all charges against him, including stirring hatred and siphoning of state funds, among others.

Gachagua was also accused of backing youth-led anti-government protests that erupted over controversial tax hikes in June.

Meanwhile, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr Samuel Njoroge, has submitted the House Resolution on a Special Motion on impeaching Gachagua.

The House Resolution, if successful, will make Gachagua the first Deputy President to be impeached under Kenya’s constitution.
