Jigawa Residents Call Out to Government as Flooding Claims 25 Lives, Displaces 4,000

At least 25 people have reportedly lost their lives, and over 4,000 have been displaced in recent flood disasters in Jigawa State. The floods have halted several businesses and forced many residents to take refuge in public school buildings after their homes were destroyed.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Haruna Mariga, revealed on Wednesday that the fatalities primarily resulted from building collapses, particularly mud houses, and boat accidents. As of Wednesday, the death toll was 16.

Maringa also mentioned that there has been extensive damage to farmland, with 2,744 hectares washed away. This would impact the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.

“The floods displaced 3,936 households and left 3,834 people homeless,” Mr. Mariga stated.

Residents of Jahun Local Government Area have voiced their frustration and despair.   In an interview by Channels TV, they called on the government to implement long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes. As the rainy season intensifies, there are growing fears that the situation may worsen, further endangering families, livestock, and farmlands.

The Jigawa State government had previously inaugurated a flood assessment committee to recommend mitigating such disasters. However, residents are urging swift and sustainable action to prevent further tragedy.
