INEC Announces Vacancies in Four Constituencies Due to Deaths, Resignation of Lawmakers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced vacancies in four constituencies due to the deaths or resignations of lawmakers.

One vacancy in the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency of Jigawa State arose following the death of Isa Dogonyaro on Friday in Abuja after an illness. The other vacancies are in state constituencies: Khana 2 in Rivers State, Bagwai/Shanono in Kano State, and Zaria Kewaye in Kaduna State.

During a quarterly consultative meeting with media executives, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated that the commission would announce the dates for by-elections in these constituencies once the necessary arrangements are made.

Prof. Yakubu said that INEC is preparing to complete outstanding rerun elections in Enugu South 1 State Constituency and Ghari (formerly Kunchi Local Government Area) in the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano. These rerun elections, initially held on February 3, were disrupted by violence and thuggery, leading to their suspension.

Additionally, Prof. Yakubu called on the media to help mobilise Nigerians, particularly those in Edo and Ondo states, to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the state’s off-cycle governorship elections.
