Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has said he remains the rightful speaker, arguing that due process was not followed in his removal.
Speaking at a rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, Obasa also denied corruption allegations against him, describing them as fictitious and unsubstantiated.
He said:
I believe in removal, there is no impeachment in the assembly; you cannot impeach a speaker. Probably there is a mistake from them. You can only remove the speaker; if you want to remove, you must ensure you follow the rules. I am not afraid of being removed, what else am I looking for? What I’m saying is if you want to do that, do it constitutionally. Follow the due process.
Obasa stated that the impeachment was orchestrated during his absence and accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of facilitating the process.
He also said security agents, led by the police commissioner, invaded the assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja, detaining his family with over 200 officers.
He rejected accusations of misappropriation, including claims that a gate construction project cost ₦16 billion.
The former speaker insisted that allegations must be substantiated with proof. “An innocent person should not be discredited without evidence,” he said.
It will be recalled that West Africa Weekly reported that the former House speaker was hurriedly impeached and replaced after expressing opposition to Seyi Tinubu’s 2027 governorship ambition.
The Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The impeachment came after he expressed that he does not lack the experience to contest the governorship race in the state following reports that Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, was endorsed by some groups as the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2027 elections.
It also came amid longstanding allegations of financial misconduct.
