House Urges Nigerians to Lodge 'Further Engagement' After Alex Ikwechegh Assault Bolt Driver

The House of Representatives said it welcomes “further engagement” from Nigerians following its member, Alex Ikwechegh’s assault on Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.

The Office of the House Spokesperson, represented by Akin Rotimi, Jr., disclosed the House’s request on Monday, October 28, 2024.

We [House of Representatives] welcome further engagement from the public on the subject, which can be shared via email at [email protected], [email protected], even as we continue to monitor the situation, the statement reads partly.

We are aware that the matter is now before the Nigeria Police, and we urge the public to allow the due process of investigation to unfold, it added.

Ikwechegh, however, is a party member of APGA representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency who, on Sunday, October 27, slapped and tore Abuwatseya’s t-shirt, an e-hailing driver for Bolt company.

Abutwatseya, the driver, had only requested Ikwechegh to come to where he parked at his residential address in Maitama, Abuja, to pick up his parcel.

Ikwechegh found such a request “disrespectful” and threatened to forcefully “disappear” Abutwatseya from Nigeria, saying that “nothing will happen.”

Ikwechegh was reported on Monday, as confirmed by Josephine Adeh, Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, who said he was undergoing questioning in Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

Meanwhile, with the use threatening language by Ikwechegh, the House urged Nigerians to submit further engagement to its spokesperson mailing address.

Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigerians, particularly the Constituents whom Ikwechegh represents in Aba North and South Federal Constituency, have the right to recall him from his position as House member.
