Gunmen unleashed terror on the Unguwar Rogo community in Ugom, Maro Ward, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, leaving destruction and fear in the hearts of the residents.
The attackers vandalised properties and looted farm products. They burned down six houses, including the ECWA Church in the community, according to a statement by the Chairman of the Ugom Progressive Union, Ishaya Onussim. The church’s valuables and the pastorium were also looted before being set ablaze.
All the residents fled into the bushes, abandoning theirGunmen Attack Kaduna Community on New Year’s Day, Burn Church and Homes belongings in a bid to save their lives, Onussim stated, lamenting the recurrent nature of such assaults in the area.
A resident, Zamani Ishaku, confirmed the incident, noting that the area has been under persistent attack by armed assailants for an extended period.
This attack follows a similar tragedy in Plateau State, where 15 people were killed in a midnight raid on Gidan Ado community in Riyom Local Government Area, just two days after police announced heightened security measures in five local government areas, including Riyom, to ensure safety during the festive season.
Attacks during the festive season are not uncommon in Plateau State. Last year, assailants killed no fewer than seventy-six individuals in coordinated attacks on communities within Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
