The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the Ghanaian government has approved the construction of a second gas processing plant to strengthen the country’s energy supply.

Speaking at a Friday media briefing at the Jubilee House, Jinapor said the project, approved by the Cabinet in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, aims to expand domestic gas processing capacity and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

We require about $700 million worth of liquid fuel to fill the fuel deficit because our current gas supply is inadequate to meet our energy needs. Consequently, Cabinet has approved a series of measures to address the situation in the medium to long term.

Cabinet, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, has also approved immediate steps to construct a second gas processing plant. This processing plant will augment the shortfall and increase supply security, the minister said.

He added that further details, including the project’s timeline and funding arrangements, will be outlined in the 2025 Budget presentation by the Minister of Finance on March 11.

According to reports, Ghana has faced recurring power supply challenges due to rising demand and limited gas processing capacity.

The new facility is expected to complement existing infrastructure, enhance gas availability for power generation and support the country’s energy needs.
