Former Niger Minister Ibrahim Yacoubou Questioned Over Alleged Human Sacrifice Case

The Attorney General at the Niamey Court of Appeal has confirmed that former Nigerien energy minister Ibrahim Yacoubou has been questioned in connection with an alleged human sacrifice case.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday evening, Attorney General Maazou Oumarou said Yacoubou was cited as a suspected instigator in the case, which stems from a police investigation launched in late July.

According to authorities, the inquiry began on July 29 after an attempted murder was reported in a suburban area of Niamey. The suspect, identified as Mahamadou Noura, was later arrested in Dosso. During interrogation, Noura reportedly admitted not only to the attempted murder but also to six other killings, which he claimed were carried out as ritual sacrifices at the request of several individuals, including Yacoubou.

Other names cited in the investigation include Issa Maiga, Ismael Karama, Elhadji Bilya, and Issa Hama. All have since been taken into custody.

The Attorney General stressed that the Public Prosecutor has instructed the judicial police to continue their investigations to produce a comprehensive case file. He further called on the public to respect the independence of the courts and place their trust in the judicial process.

Yacoubou, a former minister and political figure, was previously detained following the events of July 26, 2023, before being released on provisional liberty earlier this year.
