Gunmen suspected to be Fulani terrorists have killed at least 15 persons in the Ugboju community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The terrorists attacked the community on Wednesday evening, causing villagers to flee into the bush.

The bodies of the victims were found this morning, and search parties are combing the bush to find other missing persons, leaving the community in grief.

According to a village resident, Prince Inalegwu Adakole Simon, the attackers came to the community yesterday, January 31, around 3 pm. He said, “It was around 3 pm on Wednesday, those attackers came to my village and killed 15 persons. Some people have been displaced from their homes. Before now, we had no issue with them (terrorists).

Godwin Edoh, a member representing Agatu Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, called for the need of urgent intervention in the killings of the villagers. He expressed sadness over the cries of his people. “I am frustrated as a representative of my people by their cries. I have forwarded all the gory photos of the bodies recovered to the WhatsApp lines of both the governor and his deputy,” he said.

Spokesperson of the Benue State Police, Cathrine Anene, said multiple police officers have been deployed to the area.
