Farmer and His Two Sons Killed in Ebonyi by Suspected Herdsmen

A farmer and his two sons were killed on Friday in Amaeze, Ishiagu Community, Ebonyi State. Suspected herdsmen attacked while the victims were working on their farms. This was made known on Sunday by Hon. Emmanuel Ajah, Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area.

According to Ajah, an emergency security meeting was convened after the attack. It included local stakeholders such as military and police officers, officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), community leaders, and town union executives. The focus of the meeting was reportedlyfinding ways to prevent further violence and ensure peace in the community.

I strongly vow that the perpetrators of this ugly act shall be brought to book no matter what it might cost the government. We can’t stand to watch herders maim and kill our people like chickens, Ajah stated.

Joshua Ukandu, spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He informed journalists in Abakaliki that police operatives are still searching for the attackers and conducting operations to secure the area. Despite numerous vows to improve security in Nigerian communities, herdsmen-related violence has become increasingly common in various parts.

Recently, in neighbouring Enugu State, suspected herdsmen killed two young men in Ukpata and Opanda, located in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. In the Ukwuakpu area, between Ukpata and Uvuru communities, a student from Nsukka High School was shot while trying to protect his sister. In another incident, a passerby travelling from Adani to Opanda was fatally shot by the same armed group. Uzo-Uwani had previously also experienced similar tragedies, including the killing of mourners at Ugwuijoro Nimbo.

These deadly attacks have heightened tensions and fear in many rural communities, causing many to flee and desert their homes.
