The 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), held on November 2, 2024, at the Balmoral Convention Center in Sheraton, Lagos, celebrated a night of remarkable achievements in African cinema. The prestigious event was co-hosted by Nigerian actor Segun Arinze and Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas, drawing a star-studded crowd of filmmakers, actors, and cinema enthusiasts.

Nigeria’s The Weekend and South Africa’s The Queenstown Kings emerged as the evening’s biggest winners, each taking home four awards. The Weekend, a drama about a young woman’s journey to uncover her fiancé’s family secrets, clinched the Best Film award for Nigeria and Africa.

The Queenstown Kings, a compelling sports drama about a young soccer player’s dilemma between personal ambitions and team loyalty, also triumphed with four awards across various categories, marking a significant moment for South African cinema.

The event honoured excellence across 26 categories, with judging led by jury chair Dorothee Wenner, a respected filmmaker and curator. First-time winners and seasoned veterans alike took the stage, with Nigeria’s Mai Martaba, the country’s recent Oscar submission, winning the category for best in costume design.

In the acting categories, Ghanaian star Jackie Appiah was awarded Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Red Carpet, triumphing other strong contenders, including Girley Jazama, Oyin Oladejo, Unati Faku, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Laura Pepple, and Efe Irele.

Meanwhile, Nollywood’s Jagun Jagun, produced by Femi Adebayo, claimed three awards – Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role, Achievement in Visual Effects, and Achievement in Makeup.

The 2024 AMAA-themed “celebrating African creativity” celebrated African storytelling and the diverse narratives emerging from the continent’s film industry.
