England manager Gareth Southgate announced his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday, with the notable exclusions of forward Marcus Rashford and midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Southgate has included several uncapped players while leaving out some established stars, according to the released provisional squad list.

Rashford, a mainstay in recent England campaigns, was one of the most high-profile omission. Despite his significant contributions in the past, including 60 caps and 17 goals, Rashford’s recent dip in form at Manchester United, where he managed only seven Premier League goals this season.

Southgate noted, ”These are difficult calls. With Marcus, I feel other players in that area have had better seasons. It’s as simple as that.”

However, Rashford posted an Instagram message to the team, wishing them the best for the tournament.

For Jordan Henderson, who recently joined AFC Ajax after a brief stint with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, his exclusion may prompt considerations about his international future. Southgate cited Henderson’s recent injury and lack of game intensity as factors,

Other surprising omissions include Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling, while his teammate Cole Palmer made the provisional squad following an outstanding season. Luke Shaw of Manchester United, despite a long injury layoff, was included.

Among the uncapped players earning a spot in the provisional squad are Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Southgate will reduce the squad to 26 players by the June 7 deadline.
