#EndSARS: List of 20 protesters in Ikoyi prison made it to social media

Three years and seven months after the violent suppression of the nationwide #EndSARS protest, a list of some protesters who were unlawfully detained on government order has emerged online from the Ikoyi Correctional Centre (formerly Ikoyi Prison) in Lagos.

The October 2020 protest, which started from Twitter (now X) before taking to the streets, was a result of targeted harassment and killings of youths by the Nigerian Police Force, NPF.

Following the shootout by deployed soldiers of the Nigerian Army on October 20, 2020, the Nigerian government filed trumped-up charges against protesters, including theft, arson, murder, and possession of firearms, among many others.

However, out of thousands of youths at the two-week-long protest at Lekki Toll Gate, Amnesty International reported that at least 15 protesters were languishing in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre in Lagos on October 20, 2023.

Almost four years down the line, a list of protesters still being unlawfully detained – with the majority of them without trial – made its way to social media.
