The ECOWAS mediator for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Lansana Kouyaté, was granted an audience by Captain Ibrahim Traoré on Tuesday to discuss relations between the West African regional bloc and the newly formed confederation. Talks focused on regional cooperation, security and stability, free movement of people, and efforts to bring the AES and ECOWAS closer together.
Kouyaté, a former prime minister of Guinea, advocated for what he called an “exemplary” cooperation between the two entities, noting that “geography unites these two blocs.” According to the mediator, Captain Traoré gave “enlightened instructions” for the continuation of diplomatic exchanges.
Despite the formal withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS, dialogue appears to be continuing with the aim of preserving cooperative ties within the sub region.
