The Department of State Services (DSS) is reportedly ramping up its efforts to suppress the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.

Reports indicate that DSS operatives have arrested Kabir Shehu Yan Daki, a leader of the protests in Katsina State. An X user identified as Aboki @EmmaMillelJnr shared this and urged pro bono lawyers to assist in securing his release.

In Abuja also, the DSS has been allegedly searching for key figures involved in the protests. A protest leader revealed that operatives visited their homes on Thursday afternoon, looking to detain them.

The man, who reportedly spoke anonymously to SaharaReporters, stated:

“Those of us leading the efforts in Abuja got visited by DSS on Thursday. We are being hunted and there are efforts to pick us up. I had to change the location that DSS visited on Thursday. They visited our homes around Thursday afternoon when we left the protest but had not got home yet. If you don’t hear from me by noon today (Friday), take it to mean that I have been taken. I’ll be sure to notify you if I have not been taken by then”.

The DSS’s actions came after thousands of residents took to the streets to protest rising hunger, insecurity, and poor governance in Nigeria. The peaceful demonstrations turned violent when police, led by FCT Commissioner Benneth Igweh, fired tear gas at protesters at the Eagles Square. Journalists covering the protests faced harassment, with some being physically assaulted and their equipment confiscated. The #EndBadGovernance protests are scheduled to run until next week.
