The China Cultural Centre in Nigeria recently organised the Lanting Chinese Calligraphy Culture Salon promoting cultural exchange between China and Nigeria while showcasing the elegance and complexity of Chinese calligraphy.

At the opening of the event, Li Xuda, the cultural counsellor at the Chinese embassy and director of the Chinese Cultural Center, said “Chinese calligraphy has a long history of development. It is not only the accumulation and essence of thousands of years of Chinese civilisation, but also a treasure of world culture and art.

In ancient China, there were lots of famous Chinese calligraphers. Among them, Wang Xizhi was regarded as the ‘Sage of Calligraphy’ with his work: Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection is hailed as the pinnacle of ancient Chinese calligraphy. It not only plays an important role in art but also is one of the symbols of Chinese culture.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s permanent secretary to the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Mr James Sule in his goodwill message said, “Having Chinese calligraphy in Nigeria will be a great achievement, making it a tourist hub of the Chinese Cultural Centre in Nigeria where scholars and lovers of Chinese characters can come learn the pattern of writing.”

The highlights of the event, delivered by Zhang Yaping, a well-respected teacher at the Chinese Cultural Center in Nigeria focused on an enlightening lecture while giving attendees to an exquisite exhibition to showcase the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy.

An exhibition such as that of the Chinese Cultural Centre gives enthusiasts of cultural heritage, and visual art related to writing designs, patterns, and lettering with pen, ink brush, or another writing instrument the opportunity to explore and hone their skillset of writing while promoting multicultural heritage.
