Burkina Faso has signed two significant cooperation agreements with the Republic of Turkey, signalling a strengthened alliance between the two nations.

The signing took place during the official visit of Turkish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Burhanettin Duran, who was welcomed by Burkinabè Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.

The visit marks a new chapter in Burkina Faso–Turkey relations, focusing on enhanced defence, security, development, and trade collaboration. Discussions between the two officials highlighted the growing strategic partnership, particularly in counterterrorism.

The two key documents signed were: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a formal mechanism for political consultations between the foreign ministries of both countries. Second, a Protocol Agreement on cooperation in matters of diplomatic protocol.

Beyond defence and security, both sides expressed satisfaction with economic cooperation, transportation, and trade progress. Looking forward, they pledged to broaden the scope of their partnership across multiple sectors.

It will be recalled that Denmark recently stated its commitment to supporting Burkina Faso. Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo received Nygaard Markussen, Denmark’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes and the Sahel, during an audience in Ouagadougou.

After the meeting, Ms. Markussen stressed that their discussions focused on the global geopolitical situation, regional developments, and bilateral relations.
