Burkina Faso Permanently Bans TV5 Monde, Accusing French Network of Glorifying Terrorism

277

The military government of Burkina Faso has indefinitely banned the French international news network TV5 Monde, accusing the channel of spreading disinformation and glorifying terrorism. The country’s Superior Council of Communication announced the unprecedented move on Tuesday, marking the first time a major international broadcaster has been permanently suspended under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The council’s president stated that the decision followed numerous breaches of the law, ethics and professional conduct, particularly regarding coverage of the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region. Specifically, the government accused TV5 Monde of being complicit in the glorification of terrorist acts and of attempting to destabilize Mali and the broader Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

The violations were reportedly observed in several television news broadcasts between April and May 2026, especially during coverage of major terrorist attacks in neighboring Mali on April 25. That heavy violence in Bamako undermined the security and sovereignty narrative promoted by the military led alliance. While Burkina Faso had previously issued temporary suspensions against TV5 Monde and other Western outlets like the BBC and France 24, this is the first permanent ban.

The move continues a broader crackdown on foreign media in the Sahel, following a similar ban in Mali that has been in place since May 2025. Critics argue that the Traoré government is systematically silencing independent journalism to hide its own military failures against jihadist groups, as large portions of the country remain outside state control. Supporters of the ban, however, say Western media have a long history of biased reporting that undermines local counterterrorism efforts.

TV5 Monde has not yet issued a formal response, but a spokesperson for the network previously denied any intention to glorify violence, stating that the channel merely reports on verified events. The suspension takes effect immediately, and all broadcast licences for TV5 Monde have been revoked indefinitely.

This latest action signals that Burkina Faso is prepared to cut ties with any foreign outlet whose coverage it deems hostile to national security. It also raises fresh concerns about media freedom in a region already struggling with political instability and violent extremism.
