Bandits Kidnap Over 50 Farmers in Zamfara Villages

906

More than 50 people were abducted on Wednesday by armed bandits in the villages of Wanke and Gurusu, located in the Gusau and Gummi Local Government Areas of Zamfara State.

Local sources report that most victims were taken while working on their farms, highlighting the persistent risk that rural communities face amid rising insecurity in the region.

Residents of Kwalfada, a neighbouring village, indicated that bandits targeted individuals working in the fields around Wanke.

Meanwhile, three additional people were reportedly abducted along the Anka-Gurusu road in the Anka Local Government Area. This road has previously been a hotspot for abductions, with bandits often using it to ambush travellers.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Zamfara State, Ambassador Bala Muhammad Mairiga, confirmed the abductions but noted that specific details, including the exact number of victims, were still pending as authorities awaited official reports from security agencies and local leaders.

I cannot ascertain the number of people abducted because we have not received any official report from the security agencies or traditional institution, Mairiga told reporters.

In response to claims circulating within local communities about demands for levies by bandits, Mairiga emphasised that the government had not received formal complaints but promised a thorough investigation into these reports.

Zamfara State government will not fold its arms and allow the bandits to extort people, he assured.

The Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration is doing its best to tackle banditry and will continue to do everything possible within its power to end the menace, he affirmed.

A similar case of abduction has been reported in Niger State, where many persons were kidnapped, and some others sustained bullet wounds and are undergoing being treated at a clinic in Kagara, the headquarters of Rafi Local Government Area, Dailytrust reported.
