Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history as the first woman in 16 years to win Best African Music Act at the 2025 MOBO Awards. She also clinched the Best International Music Act award at the ceremony held in Newcastle, UK.

The Afrobeats star triumphed over strong contenders, including fellow Nigerians Asake and Tems and South Africa’s Tyla. She beat international heavyweights like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, and Latto to secure the Best International Act title. This win places her alongside Wizkid and Burna Boy as one of the few Nigerian artists to receive the prestigious award.

In her acceptance speech, an emotional Ayra Starr expressed gratitude to her supporters, calling it a surreal moment. “This is my first MOBO! I am shaking right now; I am nervous,” she admitted, thanking her fans, team, producers, and record label MAVIN Records.

Meanwhile, British-Nigerian singer Darkoo won Best Female Act, adding to the night’s recognition of African talent.

The MOBO Awards, founded in 1996 by Kanya King, honour excellence in Black-origin music, including hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and Afrobeats. Ayra Starr’s groundbreaking achievement further cements the global rise of African music.
