Akpabio Emergency Meeting Protest

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has called for an emergency meeting of the Senate. This meeting, marked as “National Importance,” is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at noon.

The announcement was made via an internal circular signed by the Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, and seen by Channels Television. The details of the meeting’s agenda were not disclosed in the circular.

It read, “Dear Distinguished Senators, the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened as follows: Date: Wednesday, July 31, 2024;  Time: Noon.

“Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed. We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause. Thanks for your usual understanding.”

Recall that the Senate had begun a seven-week recess, set to end on September 17, 2024, following the last plenary session held last Wednesday.

The Senate and the House of Representatives were on this scheduled annual break. The sudden call for an emergency session interrupts this recess, requiring all senators to attend and discuss pressing national issues.

The emergency session comes just one day before the planned #EndBadGovernationwide protest against hunger, hardship, and bad governance.
