Africa World Airlines (AWA) has officially launched its new direct flight route between Accra, Ghana and Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The inaugural flight landed on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Ouagadougou International Airport, a major expansion into the Sahel region.
The launch of this route symbolises a growing commitment to enhancing intra-African connectivity and fostering regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The airline will operate three flights weekly between Accra and Ouagadougou, aiming to strengthen trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations between the two West African nations.
At a ceremony in Accra preceding the maiden flight, AWA founder and Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, emphasised the airline’s mission to serve as a reliable and safe bridge across African nations.
Our safety record is great. Our reliability is great, and that’s the kind of tradition we expect to continue—the service we want to offer our friends from Burkina Faso, he pointed.
He also reaffirmed AWA’s broader vision of linking the Sahel region to the rest of Africa, aligning with the aspirations of former Ghanaian President John Mahama to strengthen ties with neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.
Hopefully, through them, we’ll link all of the Sahel to the rest of Africa, in line with President John Mahama’s vision of bringing Burkina Faso and Niger back into the fold., he explained.
Despite these economic hurdles, the AWA founder reiterated the company’s commitment to providing quality service while maintaining rigorous safety standards. Responding to concerns about rising airfares, Togbe Afede XIV acknowledged the financial challenges facing the aviation industry but assured customers that the airline remains focused on value and affordability.
The introduction of this new route positions Africa World Airlines as one of the few carriers currently offering regular commercial flights between Ghana and Burkina Faso. With further expansion plans in the pipeline, AWA aims to become a key player in unlocking regional mobility and driving economic development across West Africa.
It should be recalled that Ghana’s President Mahama extended official invitations to the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to attend the launch of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) 50th anniversary celebrations held on April 22, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Mahama made his first official visit to Mali on March 8, marking his first trip to a member state of the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS) since taking office. He met with Malian leader General Assimi Goïta, who serves as Mali’s transitional president and the chairman of the CSS.
