Ghana Reaffirms Withdrawal of Recognition of Polisario, Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

Ghana has reaffirmed its decision to withdraw recognition of the Polisario Front’s self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR), reiterating its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.

In a statement issued through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official social media accounts, the Ghanaian government confirmed that its decision of January 6, 2025, to withdraw recognition of the so-called “rasd” remains in effect and has not been reversed.

The clarification followed misleading reports by media outlets aligned with the separatist front regarding an audience granted by Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to an individual they described as the “ambassador of the fictitious rasd to Ghana”.

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry emphasised that the Minister received an envoy from the separatist front, not an “ambassador” accredited to Ghana, as separatist media outlets sought to portray it.

The ministry also reiterated that the Ghanaian government welcomes the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which expressed full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy proposal, with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable resolution to the dispute, consistent with the UN Charter.

The Ghanaian Foreign Ministry further stated that Ghana commits to continue with positive engagements with all parties and the international community in the pursuit of lasting peace and justice.
