The sitting chairperson of the African Union, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has praised the ground realities in Burkina Faso following a high level visit to Ouagadougou. Ndayishimiye, who is also the President of Burundi, met with the leader of the Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to discuss major challenges facing the Sahel region. The meeting is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between the Confederation of Sahel States, known as the AES, and the African Union.
At the conclusion of their talks, the Burundian leader commended the patriotism and commitment of the Burkinabe people as well as their strong support for the authorities in the fight against terrorism. He specifically congratulated Captain Traoré for his leadership and his efforts toward national stability and sovereignty. Ndayishimiye described what he saw on the ground as a reality that the African Union cannot ignore.
In a significant development, Ndayishimiye announced his intention to present an objective report to his fellow African Union heads of state. He expressed hope that the report would help strengthen cooperation between the continental body and the AES member countries. This diplomatic move could open the door to a strategic rapprochement aimed at forging a common future for Africa.
The visit marks a potential turning point in relations between the AES and the African Union, with dialogue and mutual understanding taking center stage after months of tensions following the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the regional bloc ECOWAS. Observers see Ndayishimiye’s personal visit as a signal that the African Union is willing to engage directly with the Sahelian confederation rather than leaving the matter solely to West African regional bodies.
