FIFA Honours Oshoala’s Legendary U-20 World Cup Campaign, Calls It One of the Tournament’s Greatest

FIFA has paid tribute to Asisat Oshoala’s unforgettable performance at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, with the world football governing body describing her seven-goal haul as one of the most defining individual campaigns in the tournament’s history. In a feature published on its website, FIFA recounted how the Nigerian forward burst onto the global stage, winning both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball after a string of dazzling displays that announced her arrival as a generational talent.

Oshoala’s tournament began quietly, with just one goal in the group stage, but she exploded into life in the knockout rounds. She scored twice against New Zealand in the quarter-final and then produced a stunning four-goal performance against DPR Korea in the semi-final. Nigeria ultimately fell 1-0 to Germany in the final, but Oshoala’s individual brilliance left an indelible mark on the competition. Her seven goals placed her joint-fourth on the all-time list for most goals in a single U-20 World Cup edition, level with Korea DPR’s Kim Un-Hwa, while Canada’s Christine Sinclair and Germany’s Alexandra Popp share the record with 10 goals each, set in 2002 and 2010 respectively. Oshoala remains the only African player ever to win the tournament’s Golden Boot.

FIFA noted that the Canada 2014 campaign served as a launchpad for Oshoala’s extraordinary career. Two months after the tournament, she won her first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title with Nigeria before earning a maiden senior World Cup call-up for Canada 2015, where she scored in a 3-3 draw against Sweden. At France 2019, she enhanced her reputation with a memorable goal against the Republic of Korea as Nigeria advanced to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 1999. She later became the first African player to score in three different World Cup editions after finding the net against co-hosts Australia in 2023. She missed out on a fourth World Cup appearance after Nigeria failed to qualify for Brazil 2027.

Now 31, Oshoala has become one of the most decorated African footballers in history, with six African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards and four WAFCON titles to her name. She has played for Liverpool, Arsenal, Chinese side Dalian Quanjian, Barcelona and Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, and currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. She has scored 40 goals in 74 appearances for the Nigerian senior team.
