Senegal has announced plans to formally appeal the sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football following chaotic scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations final. CAF handed down fines and suspensions to both Senegal and Morocco after incidents during and after the match.
Senegalese football authorities argue that the punishments were excessive and failed to fully take into account the context of the events surrounding the final. They insist that the appeal process is necessary to protect the country’s sporting reputation.
CAF’s disciplinary committee cited unsporting conduct involving players, officials and matchday disruptions. The governing body said the sanctions were meant to uphold discipline and safeguard the integrity of African football competitions.
Senegal’s decision to appeal keeps alive a broader debate about refereeing standards, crowd control and disciplinary consistency in major African tournaments. Football analysts say the case could set an important precedent.
The appeal is expected to be reviewed in the coming weeks as CAF seeks to draw a line under one of the most contentious AFCON finals in recent history.
