Niger’s Security Forces Record Major Gains Against Armed Groups

560

Niger’s Defence and Security Forces have reported significant results following a week of intensive counterterrorism operations conducted across the country between January 5 and January 11, 2026.

According to official figures, at least 70 fighters linked to armed groups were neutralised during the operations, while 44 suspects were arrested. Security forces also destroyed several bases and logistical positions used by armed groups, dealing a blow to their operational capacity.

In addition, livestock previously stolen during attacks on rural communities was recovered and returned to its owners, a development authorities say is aimed at restoring livelihoods and confidence among affected populations. Four incidents involving improvised explosive devices were recorded during the period, but no casualties were reported.

The security update also noted that two former Boko Haram fighters voluntarily surrendered to authorities in the Diffa region, an area that has faced persistent threats from armed groups in recent years. Officials described the surrenders as an encouraging sign of ongoing efforts to weaken extremist networks and promote defections.

The government has reiterated its commitment to intensifying military and security operations to dismantle armed groups and improve safety nationwide, while continuing measures to protect civilians and stabilise vulnerable regions.
