Ken Ofori-Atta, the former finance minister of Ghana, has been detained by United States immigration authorities over concerns about his legal status in the country. Ofori-Atta served as finance minister from 2017 to 2024 and was in the US for medical treatment. He is currently being held at a detention facility in Virginia while the authorities review his case.
The detention follows ongoing legal issues for Ofori-Atta in Ghana, where he has been under investigation for alleged corruption and financial misconduct. Ghanaian authorities previously declared him wanted for failing to appear for interviews relating to disputed contracts and procurement during his tenure. In December 2025, the Ghanaian government formally requested his extradition to face these charges.

Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives in the United States said he is cooperating with immigration officials and expects the situation to be resolved. They emphasised that the detention is administrative and related to his immigration status rather than any criminal proceedings in the US.
The case has drawn attention in Ghana and internationally. It highlights the challenges that can arise when public officials face legal issues across borders. Both Ghanaian and US authorities are coordinating the following steps, which may include hearings or other administrative procedures to determine his status.
