Benin and Niger Relations Deteriorate Further as Diplomatic Expulsions Escalate

534

Diplomatic relations between Benin and Niger have sharply deteriorated following a series of reciprocal expulsions and the suspension of embassy activities.

Benin authorities expelled two Nigerien officials stationed in Cotonou, citing diplomatic concerns. In response, Niger ordered the expulsion of Benin’s chargé d’affaires in Niamey, escalating an already fragile relationship between the two neighbours.

Amid rising tensions, Benin announced the suspension of operations at its embassy in Niamey effective 5 January 2026, leading to the halt of consular services for Beninese citizens in Niger. The move signals a significant hardening of positions and deepens a diplomatic rift that has persisted for months.

The standoff comes against the backdrop of broader regional tensions in West Africa, particularly involving Niger’s strained relations with several neighbouring states following political changes in Niamey.

Observers warn that continued diplomatic breakdown could affect cross-border trade, migration, and security cooperation in an already volatile region.
